Christmas Countdown

Hey,

This past week was crazy! Elder Taufa and I worked so hard! When we came home at night we were so tired. Usually Elder Taufa likes to talk a lot. But we've been so tired that we just pass out. We've seen a lot of miracles and have been able to be a part of a lot of different peoples lives.

On Tuesday one of the members, Matute, called us up. He's an old guy that lives all alone. He knows a lot about everything and just spends his time helping people, he's really cool! He called us and he said, "Elders, I have someone for you to baptize! Come over as soon as you can." So we went, of course. He introduced us the a girl named Joanna. She is 20 years old and she has family that lives about a half hour away. We don't know all of her story but she's had a pretty hard life. She's living with Matute for a while and he is helping her with some legal stuff. We taught her everyday this past week. It was a lot of fun and a little different. For one, she speaks english so we taught a lot of the lessons in english. Secondly, she had no religious backround. Our lessons had to be super simple. I was good for us to have to take a step back, slow down, and teach someone that God is really there!

This gospel is true! I know it!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Bautizmo!!

This Saturday we had the baptism of Stiven Lagos. He's awesome! He is an 11 year old. Both his parents aren't members but his grandparents are. His older sister Evelin was baptized and he wanted to be baptized too. So his parents told him he could be baptized on his birthday! His 11th birthday was last saturday!
Sorry this is short. Feliz Navidad!!

Thanksgiving!

We ate twice for thanksgiving! One with a strong member family (Robles) at 3 and then later at 8 with a part member family (Familia Moran). Needless to say, we ate a lot of turkey! This was also the first thanksgiving I've had where I put hot sauce on my food. It was pretty good. But what thanksgiving is really about, is being thankful!!

Transfers are this week and neither me or Elder Taufa are getting transfered! I'm super excited to spend six more weeks here! I can't wait to spend Christmas and New Years with Elder Taufa.

The work is going good. We have a baptism next saturday. I will try and send pictures but these computers don't really work.

Questions of the Soul

We had a training by Elder Kopiscke and Elder Parker, both members of the seventy, on Thursday and it was amazing! Elder Kopiscke started by inviting all of us to write down questions that we wanted to be answered. Questions that came from deep inside and that weighed down our minds. I think all of us have questions like these, or at least we should. So every missionary wrote down there own personal questions. And then Elder Kopiscke began to teach according to our needs. He answered questions and everything he talked about was supported by the scriptures. By the end of the meeting, Everyone's questions had been answered! For Elder Taufa and I, this meeting was life changing. We had had many long discussions and talks about things in the mission and how to do missionary work. And our prayers and questions were answered!

Elder Kopiscke then asked us to do this same thing with our investigators as we invite them to church. He promised us that if they write down sincre, honest questions, and then go to sacrament metting with true intent, they will recieve answers. I invite you all to do the same.

What is something that is deep in your heart? It can be anything. One missionary asked how we knew we were forgiven from sin, another how to not lose investigators. That night we had a meeting with members as well and someone asked what to do if there children were going astray. Whatever your question is I know that it will be answered if you pay attention and listen with the spirit, for he is the true teacher.

I have seen a lot of miracles in just these past few days. I know that this gospel is true.

Life In The GAM

This past week has been really good. Of course there were some downs, but a lot of good things happened. There were times where I literally felt like we were being guided everywhere we went. We had a lot of opportunities to share our message of the restoration and invite people to read the Book of Mormon. There was on specific lesson we had with a family that had attended church. The mother of the family basically told us, thanks but no thanks. She was really nice about it but she said that she didn't really feel anything drawing her to our church and that she thought 3 hours was too long. We didn't really know what to do, there were kids running around, and I could see that we were going to lose this family. So, I turned to my companion and told him that we had to teach the Restoration. The kids went outside, one of them laid down and went to sleep, and the spirit came into the room. Elder Taufa and I taught the restoration better then we have ever taught it and we both know it's because we weren't the ones teaching. The spirit taught through us and we could feel it as we testified that as she reads the Book of Mormon she will feel that feeling she is looking for. My spanish seemed to roll off my tongue with ease and both Elder Taufa and I were really excited when we got to the car.

One thing that I have learned out here is that we are really nothing without God. I have felt the weakest and stupidest I've ever felt in my life during my mission. I've not known what to say and I've felt like a failure many times. But, when I am speaking the words that God would have me say and when I am putting my trust in him, then I'm strengthened. Then I can speak and think and act clearly and confidently. So Elder Tuafa and I are doing are best to put our trust in the Him and to be instruments in his hands.

Ok, quick story. Elder Taufa makes fun of me because I don't like bugs very much. There was a really weird big spider and he made me kill it. But yesterday we were planning and he went to the bathroom and started yelling, "Freek!" a bunch of times. So I went to see what was up and there was a huge cockroach in his bath tube. This thing was the biggest one I've seen yet. It was like 4 inches long and it was pure black. He killed it but this morning he wouldn't take a shower in his bathroom. haha, I thought it was pretty funny. Cockroaches are as real as the Book of Mormon is True!

I hope this works. these computers aren't very good.

Novemeber!

November is finally here. We went out to see some people on Wednesday, and as we were droping off a member that we had been working with I realized that we had gone more miles then we had planned. So I checked how far it was to get home and found that we could make it home with 1 mile left to spare. Because with cars in the mission you can only drive a certain number of miles each month. So we are super excited for this new month and for some more miles.

This past week we felt kinda like we were swiming against the current. We were working super hard but we didn't feel like we were getting anywhere. We knocked a lot of doors and called a lot of people and nothing seemed to be happening.

Mosiah 23 Reads:

21) Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith.

22) Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day. Yea, and thus it was with this people.

This verse is talking about a rightous people. They are the people that were baptized by Alma who fled from wicked King Noah. These people were doing things right, they were keeping the commandmands and doing there best. But it says that nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to try their patience and their faith. If things aren't working out even though you are doing your best, don't lose faith! A promise is given that "whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day." So, let us put our trust in the Lord.

This is what me and Elder Taufa are doing. We were filling down. Elder Taufa's cousin had to go home, he was in the same mission as us, because of medical purposes. And it was hard for Elder Taufa. But we put our trust in the Lord and miracles are happening! Last week we felt like we had nothing to do, and now we feel like we have so much to do.

Ok, I have to tell you about Kelly Sanchez. Her boyfriend is a member and they have a little boy (about 1 year old). They come to church and she has been taught basically all she needs to be taught to be baptized and she wants to be baptized. The problem is that she can't be baptized unless she is married. According to Elder Taufa, she wanted to get married, but her boyfriend, Lester, didn't. Then he decided he wanted to get married and she didn't want to any more. Well we had a lesson last week and it was rough. There was a lot of tension in the home. They are living with Lester's parents and Lester's mother, in the middle of the lesson said, "I used to like Kelly, but know I don't like her." Kelly got up and left the room and we didn't see her again until sunday. We weren't sure what to do about the whole situation. So we decided to go see her last night. We ended up going on splits and I went with a member, Hermano Hernandez (who is super awesome!). He is a very real and straight forward guy, and he brought his wife with him. We started with a prayer and I shared a scripture and my testimony. Then, he turned to a scripture about obedience to the commandments and went right into how we won't be blessed unless we keep the commandments. The spirit was strong and both Kelly and Lester expressed that they wanted to keep the commandments and that they wanted to be married.

It was so amazing to me to see the difference from one lesson to the other. In the first lesson there was tension and hate. But, the scriptures, testimonys, and truth brought about a change of heart. I don't think I will ever forget the smiles on their faces as they decided to make this change in their lives and live the commandments.

This Gospel is True, and the book is blue!!

Transfers...

This morning we got news of what's happening this transfer, which is on Wednesday. Both Elder Bradshaw and I will be transferred. Elder Martinez is going to stay in this area for his last six weeks of his mission. Elder Bradshaw is going to become a District leader and he will be in an English area speaking English. He doesn't like that very much but he will be a good District leader.

I'm just going. It's kinda hard to leave this area and all the people I have grown to love. The members are so great in this branch! And we have been working with so many great people! When we got into this area we didn't have hardly anyone to work with, and now we have so many families that have been prepared and are ready!! It is sad to know that I won't be able to be here and help them follow Christ. But at the same time I know that they will be in good hands and that there are other people who I can serve.

We had Dia de los Nacciones on Saturday! It turned out really good and was a lot of fun. None of our investigators came, which was a bummer. But some of the members brought their founds and we were able to talk with them. Also, on Sunday Ernesto Rodriguez brought a friend who was really excited to learn. The members here are super awesome.

Anyways, I'll fill y'all in next week.
Be Happy and Smile

Status Report

Weather: Perfect
It's getting colder already and we can open our windows at night, which is nice

Weight: 16 lbs
According to Walmart, I've gained 16 pounds. I guess that's what happens when you eat torillas and hardly exercise.

Spirits: High
Everything is going good here in Georgia.

We are going to have a party this Saturday. Dia de las Nacciones or Day of the Nations. Since the people in the branch are from different countries everyone is going to bring food from their country. It's going to be great! There is also going to be dancing and it's going to be a great activity to bring investigators to!

General Conference

"Muy Buenos Dias" (D. Todd Christofferson)

Last Thursday we had New Missionary Training. It lasted for half the day and was great! On Friday we went to the Temple in the morning. After we went to the Temple we were allowed to watch "Meet the Mormons." Then we had General Conference. It has been quite the weekend and I almost don't know what to do with all that I have learned.

"Meet the Mormons" is really really good and you all should watch it. President Sullivan is a Bishop in the movie because it was filmed a couple years ago.

General Conference! This was the best General Conference I have ever witnessed. I guess as a missionary some of the things they say have more meaning. I don't have the time (slow typer) to tell you all the things I learned. But y'all can listen to them and receive your own revelation that will mean more to you anyway. I just wanted to talk about President Monson.

There was a lot said about following the Prophet. And what the Prophet told us to do was follow the example of our Savior, Jesus Christ. President Monson just gave us the instructions of life. If you have questions, if things are going wrong, if things are going right, if your happy, if your sad, whatever is going on in your life what you need to do is look to Christ. He is the way.

My prayer is that we can all follow his example and find the peace and joy that comes as a result. I love you all and I pray for you.

Facebook!

I just wanted to make that the subject of this email because I didn't know what to put there, and I thought it would be funny if everyone saw that and thought that I was going to be using Facebook now. I'm not, yet. But the time is coming soon where I will have an ipad and I will probably use Facebook a little bit for missionary purposes only. Really what I wanted to say is that the Georgia Atlanta Mission has a Facebook page. Every time we have meetings there is someone walking around with a camera. So, check it out. I'm sure there's some pictures of me on there. You can probably find it if you search for Georgia Atlanta Mission.

Being in a Trio is great. We all get along good and life is good. There is always something to learn and improvement to be made. It can get really overwhelming sometimes. I can see how much I don't know, how much I need to learn, and I just wish I could know it all.

I feel like my emails are a little preachy. I'm sorry if they are and if you don't like that. I'll try to do better at telling storys.

Have a great week!

I don't know if you can read the bumper sticker but I thought it was funny.

Elder Martinez

Elder Martinez is now my companion with Elder Bradshaw. He is from Chile and he is going home in 11 weeks. He's Spanish is pretty good because it's his first language, but his English is really good also. He learned English out here on his mission, which gives me hope :) My Spanish is slowly getting better. Everything is great! Love Y'all

Listening

So something I've been thinking about a lot lately is listening. What people say is really important. Everything we say reflects off of our thoughts. So, by hearing and understanding what people say we can understand what they want, think, or need. So, listen to others. Take advantage of the fact that we understand what the words mean that are coming out of their mouths, haha. Spanish is actually coming alright. The day will come where I will be fluent. It's just there are so many people, and all of us are people, and we all want to be heard, but if we all are talking then there will be no understanding and nobody will be heard, so listen.

This past week was hard. We meet so many awesome people the previous week, and I was so excited for this week. But then, appointments dropped, calls weren't answered, and it was rough.
But I'm not discouraged. We are working with a man named Santos. He's having a hard time. He was living with his sister, but she kicked him out and now he is living with his brother and his job is pretty unstable. But he is cool. He is a quiet guy and we have met with him 3 times. He has started reading the Book of Mormon and I'm excited for him.

I Love Y'all.

I Love To See The Temple!

We went to the Temple last Tuesday and it was wonderful! It truly is the House of the Lord and I wish I could've stayed there forever. I have pictures but I forgot my camera in the car.
Oh, by the way I will have a car my entire mission (not trying to rub it in or anything Elder Harmon the older). But since we have to find the places where Hispanics are and can't just go anywhere we get cars.
Other than that everything is awesome! We are teaching two families wonderful families!

Family 1 (don't know their last name yet)
Dominga - a single mother with
Paula - 16
Arianna - 10-13ish
Steven 10-13ish
Alison: 5 or 6

They are wonderful and ready to make changes in their lives.

The Gallardos
Santos
Sonia
7 hijas (daughters) I still need to learn their names.

I Love You All. Have a great week.

GAM

I made it safe and sound to Georgia. It's beautiful out here, very humid (which doesn't really bother me), and my companion is awesome. My companion is Elder Bradshaw from Orem, he's really smart (31 ACT) (by the way I don't go around asking everyone that, but... I find out somehow), he has a good memory and is really good with numbers (nice for addresses and cellular devices and stuff like that), he works hard, knows Spanish, and all those great things. We are both new to our area, Cunningham, so this first week has been slow. We have spent a lot of time trying getting to know people and figure out where to go and what to do. It's especially hard for me because I'm constantly trying to just understand what people are saying. By the way there are a lot of Hispanic people here in Georgia. I've had a lot of Mexican food and it's AWESOME! Last night I probably put down ten taco thingys with rice and meat. Oh, and one night a member made us some handmade tortillas. Yep, you don't need fried chicken when you in the south, you only need some Mexican food. It's pretty good.

I love it here. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. This Gospel is TRUE! I know I say that everytime, but that's because it is. I gave a blessing, (the second blessing I have given, and it was in English) to a man who we found while we were knocking on doors. I tell you this only to let you know that I KNOW that I hold the priesthood and that priesthood comes directly from GOD. God lives! He knows us, he knows you. Look to him in all that you do and he will help you. This past week I started to turn inward and to think more about myself. It was getting hard with the Spanish and the newness of everything. Whenever I talked I was more worried about whether I was saying things right or what I was doing wrong instead of thinking about the person I was talking to. I became more focused on myself than others. People see me differently. I'm no longer a human, I'm a missionary. I can see that in peoples eyes. Some people immediately hate me and don't want to hear a thing I say. Others look upon me with respect. But in either case I started to become self centered. So I challenge all y'all to focus on the people around you. Look to God! Serve him! How do you serve God? by serving each other!

Things here at the CCM basically are the same. I do a lot of studying, I´ve played more soccer here then I have the rest of my life combined, and I try to speak a different language. The biggest thing that happened this week was the departure of the Hispanic missionaries. Because they knew spanish already they were here for only two weeks and they left yesterday. It was actually really sad because I had grown really close to them. We talked every night, we sang together, they taught me some spanish, a little karate, and they danced for me. We were good friends. There was also another group of about 6-10 Hispanic Missionaries who would come to our apartment every once in a while to hear some rapping. Elder Jordan is really good at rapping, I would give him a beat, he would rap, and they would go crazy! it was a lot of fun :) Every time I would see one of them around campus they would start trying to beat-box and start laughing. It was great. The best part was none of them really spoke English, expect for Elder Sanchez, so we got a good taste of how it feels to listen to spanish at it´s actual speed, which feels like trying to understand the stuff at the end of a medicine commercial. My Spanish is getting better, but it will be getting better for a while before it is where it needs to be.

District 14 B

I have been in the CCM for about 3 weeks and I have about 3 weeks left!
So below you will notice a picture has been attached. The picture is of my district taken last week at the temple. I will now explain each character to you from left to right. If you don´t really care because you will never see these people, then you can press the archive button and wait to here from me next week :)
Here we go:

Elder Benlap - He is a genius! 34 on his ACT. He is very quiet, but when you talk to him one-on-one he has a lot to say. He is going to BYU after his mission. He also is going to Atlanta Georgia for his mission

Elder Jones - Companions with Elder Benlap. Going to Atlanta Georgia. He ran a 4 min 30 something second mile in high school and is really good at soccer. He is going to be a college athlete at SVU.

Elder Adamovich - He is smart and good at teaching the lessons. However, he is hard to talk to normally and bugs me in a way. I´m not sure why so I try to think positive and I´m really nice to him any way.

Elder Peart - His Dad is some big guy in Microsoft, so his first car was a Mercedes-Benz that he totaled shortly after he got it. However, for being a rich kid he is a surprisingly hard worker and he has a strong testimony. He has a way of connecting with people and a lot of potential to be a great missionary.

Elder Jordon - Went to BYU for a semester before he came out here. He is a great leader and really nice. He has an AMAZING voice! It took me a while to get him to sing for me, but he can sing! He was in a band and has taken voice lessons and he is good.

Elder Palacios - He has a strong spirit about him and is going to be an amazing missionary. He is probably my favorite of all the guys because he is just so down to earth and sincere. We get along very well and have had a lot of good discussions.

Me

Elder Pace

Hermana Moody - Crazy, has an amazing voice, strong testimony. Knows a lot of spanish

Hermana McArthur - Quiet, good studier, played soccer in college, knows a lot of spanish.

I love my district. All of us are so different but we have a lot of very spiritual moments together. I love you all.

Re: I´m here!!

Elder, your email was WONDERFUL!  Would you please help me with a memory of mind.  Was I your Primary teacher?  I know I taught some of you guys but I am hitting the Senior Citizen world if you will.  You were small then.  Perhaps you don't remember.  Let me know.

Thanks for including me in your email list.  Its going to be fun.  I am really proud of you and your brother who is also serving.

Hola, Right now I´m in the CCM (or MTC in english) in Mexico City. My
email wasn´t loading so i´m in basic HTML. So my email will probably
be one big paragraph. Anyways, the CCM. I left last wednesday morning
(I can´t believe I´ve been here for a week!!). My flight in Denver got
delayed for 4 hours and I didn´t make it to the CCM until after 9
o´clock. When I got here I got to do some things like email my parents
and get a ton of books before I went to my room. I got to my room at
about 10:45 and woke my compainion up. His name is Elder Pace. I
couldn´t have asked for a better companion. He is a very hard worker
and he is very devoted to being a great missionary. We work well
together and are able to talk to each other very easily. He is the
kinda guy that starts singing with me when I randomly burst into song.
We are having a blast. Our first couple days everyone keep telling us
to just make it until sunday and then it gets better. I guess that it
is hard for some people to leave behind everything at first. But we
haven´t had time to think about anything but the work. There is SO
much to do. Spanish is HARD. The second day we were here we began
teaching our first investigator, Ramiro, in only spanish. It is so
hard to be so limited in communication with others. It is really hard
for me to sit there with Ramiro, listen to him, and want to tell him
all the things I know and to promise him that God loves him, but not
know how to say it. That has been the hardest thing for me. I do miss
everyone, but I know I´m where I am supposed to be, so it isn´t very
hard. Gosh, I wish you could all see this place! God has and is
preparing his missionaries and they are a beautiful sight! I´m very
impressed with the quality of young men and women who are here! It is
very obvious that everyone has weaknesses, but if you could only see
their strength. Right now there are about 300 missionarys here, by the
time I leave there will be 1000. This gospel is true! Um... what else?
The food is ok. I eat healthy so I haven´t gotten sick. I feel like it
can be compared to the food you would get at a high school cafeteria.
I mean it is Mexican food, but the quality thereof is lacking a little
bit. However, I´m not picky and I just eat everything. I almost always
go back for seconds and I think I´ve probably already started gaining
weight. I´m running out of time. I Love you all!! Don´t be afraid to
email me or ask me questions. I will read your emails and I might even
respond... if i have time.  I love you.      Elder Harmon
